How to Run Family Meetings
In addition to running a business, there's an additional level to pay attention to--your family dynamics.
Are family members bringing up family issues that are better suited for the dinner table?
Are family members doing things you wouldn't allow your employees to do? Long lunches? Sniping comments under their breath? Showing up to meetings unprepared?
It's time for a family smackdown.... I mean, a family meeting.
6 Steps: How to Have a Successful Family Business Meeting
- Meet weekly, same time, same place
- Agree that these meetings are confidential. All discussions are for family members only.
- Have someone else lead the meeting sometimes so you can study the dynamics and participate as a member, not just a leader
- Start with complimenting each other (work-related) and business celebrations
- Move into issues. Don't be the first to speak. Let someone else bring up an issue and watch the resolution process. You can contribute but don't lead with your own personal pet peeve and don't prescribe "the solution" without input from others. That's like Mom or Dad hijacking a perfectly good discussion. Lay low this round.
- The format for Issues discussion is: Issue, Brainstorm possible solutions, Decide on what you're going to try for a week, Revisit the issue (put it on next week's agenda to follow up)
- No attacking the person who's brave enough to bring up an issue. This space has to a safe place for real discussion.
- End with the calendar--what's going on this week? Busy days? Client meetings? Support from others? What do each of you need for success?
Consistency is the key. The first few meetings might feel awkward and that's ok. As your family starts to see the benefits, they'll get on board and start looking forward to these collaborations.
